Having lived through hurricanes in Puerto Rico, including Hurricane Hugo which was a category 3-4, I’ve had to go without water and electricity for almost two weeks. It’s not an experience I ever wanted to relive. Living in New York City, I never believed I would have to prepare for one again, but prepare I did.
With the threat of power outages hanging over our heads, I decided I would not risk losing the food I had in my fridge. I made pernil, rice and peas, chicken cutlets, baked chicken, beef and turkey empanadas, and blueberry muffins.
I also went to the store and stocked up on necessities. I purchased 50 bottles of water, 5 gallons of juice, 2 gallons of skim milk, 4 boxes of boxed Milk, 4 boxes of cereal, 4 cans of salchichas, 1 can of Spam, 4 containers of sliced ham,4 containers of sliced turkey, 3 bags of thin sliced wheat bagels, 1 Italian bread, 1 bag of crossants, 2 dozen eggs, 2 boxes of Raisinets, 2 boxes of apple pies, 2 bags of pita chips, 1 20lb bag of organic dog foord, 4 doggie treats, 4 bags of chedder cheese (for dogs-their fave!) and that’s just counting the food!
I also made sure to get ice and fill the tub up with water. Why? Bueno/well, to fill up the toilet tank of course! With 3 humans and 2 dogs, I can not afford to have a non working tiolet in my apartment. The stench would drive me mad, if I didn’t!
I purchased batteries for my flashlight and battery powered radio, charged our 4 laptops, 4 cell phones, 3 iPods and 1 iPad. Knowing my little one was nervous, I also purchased 3 additional handheld hand powered flashlights, books, games and dog toys. I figured this would keep the boys and dogs occupied.
¿Exagera?/ Exaggerator? Maybe… but I rather “Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.”

P.S. Because the Sony Bloggie I used to take videos and pictures of midtown SUCKS and deleted everything I had, I have no images to show. I wanted to go back out and use my Canon but my sons almost revolted 🙁

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
- Con Ed is still determining if they will shut service down in areas between 2-10am. This is being shut down to save equipment.
- If you live in a highrise above the 10th floor, stay away from the windows.
- Irene is expected to last up to 12 hours in New York City. During that time, you should NOT go outside.
- Transportation has shut down and can take up to 8 hours to bring back up.

Wow! I am over here on the west side of the US.I have not experienced hurricane weather, but I can only imagine the angst of things. I am not sure how it is over there in NYC, but over here we have preparedness stores. In these stores you can purchase essentials needed to live incase of a natural disaster… It is kind of scary to think of what might happen, but you never know. I can say that I am not fully prepared, but at the current moment I do have some foods storage and a few other basic essentials needed incase something were to happen over night and we couldn’t get to a store. I hope thinks blow (lol) over quick for you guys and remains safe. Take care.

I swear the next time NYC is in a crisis I’m coming over to your place to eat 🙂 We’re doing ok here in Harlem but waiting to see if the power outtage will affect us or not
Hope you are all okay. Do you have power? We are okay in Long Island, still have power. Other areas were hit harder on this island. Just glad the only things that fell to the ground were leaves and branches.
