As one of the Go Red for Women and Go Red Por Tu Corazon Spokeswomen, I am excited to announce the “Go Red” Twitter Party!
Last year I became a Go Red Spokesperson after seeing how heart disease was devastating my family. The unhealthy habits my family had practiced for many years had devastated us. Those practices were passed onto me and I, in turn, was passing them onto my sons. I was scared, very scared.
In the end, I made changes. I became educated. I made sure I stayed up to date with my numbers: cholesterol, blood pressure, weight. I had to look at myself in a new light. I could no longer say my muffin top was just an inconvenience. I had to admit to myself that my waist size was a precursor to heart disease.
I stopped frying and started baking. I brought skim milk instead of whole milk. I brought fresh fruits and vegetables. I cooked whole grain rice and sometimes brown. They were small changes. Changes we could live with. Changes that would help ME live. Changes that have inspired my family to get more active and become healthier.
We learned the risks and took the steps to prolong our lives. I did not want to become the eleventh member in my family to undergo open heart surgery.
Could I have been overreacting?
No.
Latinas suffer from heart disease at least 10 years earlier than Caucasian women.
Yet this doesn’t have to be our future.
This February, Go Red Por Tu Corazón invites you to Live for Your Heart and Go Red by living a healthy life to help prevent the No. 1 killer of Hispanic women –heart disease. To get us started, we’re kick off the month with a Go Red Twitter Party!

I’m in!. This is so viral, My mother in law is 84 years old and she can’t have a surgery, her heart is not as strong as it used to be and I know she’ll be proud to know that I’m doing my best to improve my health and pass the example to all the women I know!
