School begins in New York City on September 8. Shortly after the boys and I will celebrate a slew of birthdays, special events, and holidays, all of which will require greeting cards:  birthday cards, Christmas Cards, Holiday Cards, Photo Cards and Baby Announcements, to name just a few.

Due to the economy, New York City has faced a slew of budget cuts. Many programs were closed or drastically reduced. Sadly, children were not spared.

Come September when schools open their doors in New York City, many children will be left without after-school programs, tutoring services, and sports and arts classes. Parents will also be forced to provide the basics that were normally given to our generation, like books, pencils, crayons, and even cleaning supplies!

The lack of cleaning supplies is particularly disturbing since children spend most of their days at school; consequently, it can become a breeding ground for germs. Knowing this Clorox wishes to remind families that we should teach our children the below three easy steps to prevent the spread of germs and maintain environments that inspire brighter futures:

1. Sing and Scrub: Wash hands with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds (the time it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice).
2. Do the Elbow Cough: Cough and sneeze into your elbow instead of your hands to help prevent the spread of germs by touch.
3. Disinfect Hot Spots: School staff and adults should routinely clean areas that people touch often, like desktops, remote controls and light switches.

What’s important to note is that even if a classroom starts out clean, germs can – and do – build up all day. In a study done at the University of Arizona by Dr. Charles Gerba*, evidence of Influenza A virus was found on 13.6% of swabbed surfaces in the morning and jumped to about 50% by the afternoon! As a parent, this concerns me; as such, I plan to support my children’s teachers in keeping their classrooms clean by providing teachers with hand sanitizers and canisters of Clorox Disinfecting Wipes to help make clean-up easier.

Clorox is also helping needy schools via its grant called “Power a Bright Future”. Power a Bright Future is a grant program that will provide resources to schools in need of support. They program will give away a total of $110,000, one $50,000 grand prize grant and three $20,000 grants.

Have you seen my youngest and most active son, Andrew,  pictured below? If I had to rate his activity level it would definitely be “HIGH”. He’s a sports fanatic, on and off the field! 

On any given day, you can find Andrew roughing it up with his friends playing football, softball, soccer and basketball. Not surprisingly, his clothes  take a beating! For that reason, I look for clothes that can handle the wear and tear, while also looking fashionable. 

LRG  is one of the brands we like. Its urban style fits the fashion forward get up and go attitude my tween has. He loved how he looked in it. I, on the other hand, love its affordability!

I actually received the Mother’s version of Dear Dad, called Dear Mom. I absolutely loved it! I will also admit I cried when I saw read my sons had inscribed on the pages. The photos in the book represented all the wonderful, generous and loving aspects of a mother, just as the “Dear Dad” book does for fathers. I also believe that “The Memento: The Gift of a Lifetime” By Michael McQueen is worth its weight in gold! It gives you a beautiful journal to log down your father’s history. Something that will be treasured for many years to come!

As for the “Handy Dad 25 Awesome Projects for Dads and Kids” By Todd Davis, I’m keeping that for myself! I love crafts and this is definitely a book that I will put to use with my sons.

The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey is coming to Coney Island. Last year, I had  a fun filled day at the Coney Island Boom A Ring Circus. The boys and I hooted and hollered during the show, enjoying ourselves immensely.  This year looks like it will be just as good, if not BETTER than last year’s circus show.

CoverGirl has some great lipgloss and lipstain colors coming out this summer. I’ve looked over their website and really love the ShineBlast Lipgloss in Smolder. According to their website, “Light reflecting shimmer layered under a high-gloss finish gives you 4x more noticeable shine. I’ve always viewed my face as a canvas. In order to create a masterpiece (ME!), I know that my canvas, my face, has to be clean.

Covergirl’s Simply Ageless Primer allows me to create that clean look. It uses Olay Skincare ingredients to help restore your skin’s youthful appearance. The Clean foundation, appropriately named I may add, gives that truly clean look. To give me the perfect finish, I topped it off with the Clean pressed powder. This sets my face and takes away the oilyness I always seem to get on my T- zone.

I also have to note that the foundation and powder are available for sensitive skin. Since my skin is sensitive, this was  perfect for me. It did not cause me to break out in hives or acne. Overall, I was delighted with the facial products I sampled. They provided the flawless canvas that I need to start my day! I have to admit that I’m also swayed by their prices because who doesn’t want to be frugal nowadays!

As a young woman, I used CoverGirl all the time.  Their products helped me look chic but never cheap. I couldn’t have asked for more!

Although I haven’t used their products in some time, I was excited to be given the opportunity to try out several samples from their  new Eye, Face, Lips product lines. I was not surprised to find out that they are still as trendy as ever!

The Liquiline Blast eyeliner made my eyes look large and bright, while the CoverGirl Fusion Mascara made my lashes appear longer and fuller. I did not receive any samples of CoverGirl’s new Smoky ShadowBlast eyeshadow, but did get a chance to look at the product online. According to the website the “ShadowBlast stick make(s) it easy to create a bold, colorful, smoky eye”. Overall, I was pleased with the eye products received. I also loved the fact that their products allow you to create the latest looks without breaking the bank. Two very important qualities for this Latina!

Its the second day of Latina On a Mission’s blogaversary countdown to April 1st.

With April right around the corner, I’m reminded of the saying, “April showers bring May flowers”. I’m hoping the saying will prove true so that I can show off my UrbanTrim Squidarella umbrella yet AGAIN!

I’ve heard so much about “green” products from friends and the media over the past few years and never gave it much thought until my youngest son’s issues with sensitive skin became known. Since his skin is extremely sensitive, I do try to use green products to clean his clothes, bedsheets, toys and room.

I don’t always succeed in making the right decisions. In fact, in these tough economic times, I must admit the price of a product can and does trump its green qualities. However, with ecostore USA’s green products I don’t have to choose. I can have a green product that doesn’t break the bank.

I first heard of ecostore over Twitter. At that point, I was given the opportunity to select two products that my family could use. I was able to select from their Baby Care, Bath & Body, Hair, Household, and Pet Care products. I chose the  Pure Oxygen Whitener and the Laundry Liquid. 

The Pure Oxygen Whitener is made with oil of citrus, coconut and other plant-based ingredients. Its an alternative to traditional bleach, which can be very strong and abrasive to people with sensitive skin. It does not have the harsh smell found on the bleach I normally purchase, yet brightens clothes just as well. I have also used it to clean my son’s toys.

The second product I received was the Laundry Liquid,  a concentrated laundry liquid, made from “100% Certified Organic Eucalyptus oil and plant-based ingredients”. The Laundry Liquid is gentle enough for people with sensitive skin, like my son. I also selected the liquid form, versus the powder form, because I find its easier to use in the laundromat.

The prices for the products I received, Pure Oxygen Whitener and Laundry Liquid, were very reasonable at $12 and $11, respectively.  They also lasted for quite some time because they were concentrated, doing more with less.  The prices on their other products are just as reasonable as the two I received which means price is not the determining  factor anymore.

I recently received the basket shown on the left. I was recently given the opportunity to review the new Caress’ Evenly Gorgeous beauty bars & body wash. When the box arrived, I opened it and was met with a delightful smell. Normally, I prefer scentless soaps so that they don’t compete with my perfume. However, after smelling the mixture of burnt brown sugar and Karite butter, I decided to forgo the perfume. I’m glad I did.

The Burnt Brown Sugar and Karite butter act to gently exfoliate and moisturize the skin. By exfoliating the top layer of dead skin, it enhanced the moisturizer’s performance. This serving as an added protection, leaving behind smoother even looking skin. 

With this cold weather, my skin tends to dry out more rapidly, looking and feeling flaky and ashy. After using the body bar, I noted that my skin DID look smoother. My skin felt silkier, smoother… touchable. ¡Me encanto! / I loved it!

I have to admit I haven’t used the body wash yet. I’m waiting for a day when I can soak in the tub, when the boys spend a day with family. Till then I sometimes open the top just to take a whiff. Yes, I’m weird like that.  ;)

Latina On a Mission is having a weekly Disney video game giveaway during the month of January! This week, our last, we’re giving away the Disney Fairies: Tinkerbell and The Lost Treasure DS Game! My boys and I received these games at a Disney event we attended in 2009. We were able to test out several games and take a few home afterwards. My little one was extremely excited. However, it was short lived once he found out he couldn’t play them at home because he doesn’t have a DS.

My hairstylist, a wonderful lady, who did an amazing job with my hair was recently let go from the salon near my apartment. When I say I wanted to cry, I’m not exaggerating! She did a wonderful job of cutting and styling my hair. I’m a coffee lover. In fact, I couldn’t make it through the day without a few cups of my java jolt! My boys, on the otherhand, love tea and hot chocolate on those cold mornings. I’m glad we all love different types of drinks but have to say it was a chore when I had to make three different types of drinks every morning.  Those days are long gone! I recently received an assortment of Unilever products to review. They included the items pictured above. My all time faves were the Dove Cool Essentials Deodorant (smells DIVINE!) and the Pond’s Cleansing Towelettes.

Before receiving the products, I have to admit I was already a Pond’s follower. I grew up watching my Mami/Mother using the Pond’s cleanser and moisturizer every day. She taught my cousins and I the essentials of proper facial care, how to apply it and to always remove our make-up. As a busy single Mami, I have to admit I have not been as good as she has with removing my make-up in the evening. The Pond’s Cleansing Towelettes changed that! I now leave the box by my bed for those night’s when I am too tired to get up and remove my make-up. I know its the lazy way but once I hit that bed my body does NOT want to get back up! This keeps my pores clean and prevents break-outs (Yes, its horrible I still break-out!).

I have to tell you one of my favorite beauty tips dealt with the towelettes I mentioned above. It explained how easy it was to carry a pack in your purse (It is!). Its perfect for those times when you need to switch up your work make-up to date glam or during your mid-day gym workout! Its quick and easy, which goes along well with my no fuss no muss motto!

The boys and I recently received several Skin Free products to review, including the Skin Free Extra Moisturizing Soap, the Sweet and Smooth Sugar Scrub and the Whipped Tamanu Body Butter. I was a bit hesitant about using the products on Prince since he has very dry and sensitive skin; however, after reviewing several testimonials from board certified dermatologists I felt confident enough to proceed. I can now say after using the Skin Free products that I am switching from my other brand to Skin Free! I was even able to use my Medical Flex Card to purchase these items at Walgreens,  saving our skin AND money!

The Skin Free Extra Moisturizing Soap, which is sold at CVS, Walgreens and other retailers, was perfect! It did not dry out his skin. Instead, it held true to its label and moisturized. The Skin Free Extra Moisturizing Soap reduced the ashy look of his skin with each use. The Whipped Tamanu Body Butter was another fabulous product. Just like the soap, it contained no fragrances, no colorants, petroleum products or harmful chemicals. It was light and did not leave a greasy residue. This was perfect for an 8 year old boy who will not sit long enough for any body lotion to dry and does not like my “girl smelling” lotions! Together, they moisturized his skin preventing undue cracks and cuts and ultimately making his skin look and feel healthier.

Big K and I also used the soap, along with the Sweet and Smooth Sugar Scrub. I have to admit we fought over it because I didn’t want him to “waste” it. He did complain about the lack of fragrance but that was one of the reasons I loved it since it didn’t compete with the perfume I later put on. Its a great product that exfoliates the skin, preventing acne breakouts. Its also gentle enough to use on the face, which I did, just make sure you don’t let it get in your eyes (Big K did - poor kid!)  

After using these products on my family, I highly recommend them. They are all natural product that will pamper your skin without hampering your bodies natural defenses. Also, if you haven’t used all the monies deposited into your Medical Flex account, these products qualify!

I recently had the opportunity to review an amazing t-shirt from Pretty Brainy.  The founder and CEO, Heidi Olinger, set out to create an inspirational T-shirt to motivate tween girls to reach for their dreams while also looking stylish and chic. I believe she succeeded!

Heidi sent a beautifully wrapped t-shirt, with a letter addressed to my 9 year old niece, Elena, an avid soccer player. The t-shirt we received was no ordinary t-shirt, it was so much more than that! It was a long sleeved black t-shirt with beads at the ends of the sleeves. The shirt also had a short bio of a great female athlete on the right sleeve that reminded Elena that she too could grow up to become a great athlete! In the center of the front of the shirt is the company’s name “Pretty Brainy”, while the back of the shirt screamed out to all who read “Look Who’s Pretty Brainy”,  wonderful reminders that being smart is beautiful and my niece definitely is!

The beads on the t-shirt will hold up in the washer and dryer. Its best to turn the shirt inside out and wash in a lingerie bag in the washer. Elena loved the shirt so much that her Mom washed it by hand even though it said it could go in the washer. She also air-dried it but she’s green like that! I would have thrown it in the dryer :) 

Below is a picture of the T-shirt she received.

The letter Elena received with the t-shirt was also a beautiful touch not found in many companies. It personalized the t-shirt and made her feel special. Heidi included a reference to my niece’s love of soccer and how she too could become a great athlete just as Babe Zaharias, the woman referenced on the t-shirt. But she didn’t stop there, she also reminded her that the world is hers if she dreams big, plans and doesn’t give up! This extra touch, the ability to connect with Elena and personalize the shirt, made her company stand out from so many others! When I inquired, Heidi stated that the letter is customary for all orders because Pretty Brainy doesn’t just want to sell you a t-shirt, they want to INSPIRE your daughter to be all that she can be!

I was recently given the chance to select and  review several books. “Jantsen’s Gift”  by Pam Cope, with Aimee Molloy, was the first book that I was able to read.  You can browse inside the book by clicking below. 

Jantsen’s Gift was based on a true story of one mother’s battle and ultimate renewal after the death of her son. It was such an inspirational book because we all must go through a death in our lives before we can begin anew. This is true when any relationship ends, in a lay off, and even in the loss of a home!  These problems, or deaths, just mean that our lives are now open to a new beginning but only if we are able to let go. At first, Pam Cope could not let go. She handled the death in her life as many of us would have and sometimes do. She burrowed into a cocoon; however, in that cocoon she grew and she changed. Ultimately, becoming a better HER just as we can become a better US!

One particular part in the book stood out for me so much, I highlighted the passage. It was during Pam’s mourning period when she was still in her cocoon. Her friends who had also suffered a loss of their own consoled her, telling her the following:

You need to know something. You are going to be sadder and your life is going to be harder than you ever thought. But it’s also going to be richer, too, and much deeper. You will feel things you have never felt before, and have a perspective you would never have otherwise had. It’s going to be very bad but it’s also going to be unbelievably great.

Jantsen’s Gift will inspire you to reach beyond yourself, to that unbelievable greatness that we all have. It will reinforce just how valuable you are and how much power you can wield when you just believe in yourselves.
