THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Movie Review

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to see an advance screening of The Amazing Spider-Man™ in 3D.

********************

The Amazing Spider-Man™ is unlike any of the previous versions. The graphics, action and actors meld together to show you a side of Peter Parker’s story that’s never been seen before. It is the story of a child abandoned by his parents and the lengths one will go to uncover those family secrets. The abandonment is shown in the first few minutes of the movie, when the parents pack up and drop Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) off with Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field).

We then fast forward to Peter’s teenage years. In this portrayal, Peter Parker is shown as a skate-boarding, photo-taking, super intelligent, outcast. Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy, who is played superbly by Emma Stone. Together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. Peter soon finds an old briefcase that belonged to his father, and with the discovery  secrets begin to unravel and the trail of his parents’ disapperance leads him directly to Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), his father’s former best friend and business partner. This knowledge brings him on a collision course with his future as Spider-Man, Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, and life-altering choices to use his Spider-Man powers and shape his destiny, and others around him.

Unlike the previous Spider-Man, played by Tobey McGuire, I believe Andrew Garfield embodies the look, strength and snark needed to re-create the Spider-Man Marvel originally intended in their comic books.  Garfield convinces you with a combination of boyish charm, snark and vunerabilty. I, also, enjoyed the chemistry between Garfield and Emma Stone. Their relationship seemed geniune.

I also have to commend Sally Field on her performance. Although she is only seen as a supporting role, she did it fantastically! She reminded me of the comic book Aunt May, with her combination of vulnerability and strength. Totally loved her!

Overall, I give this movie a 5 star and I have never, ever said that on this blog. It’s a great  fit for families and a must see. See it in theaters and make sure you get the DVD when it comes out. I sure will!

The Amazing Spider-Man was rated PG-13 by the MPAA for sequences of action and violence. Note, smaller children who are easily frightened may be afraid of some of the action scenes.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Movie Review with Spoilers

ALERT! The below movie review for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN has spoilers. Click HERE to read THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN movie review withOUT spoilers.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, in 3D, opened nationwide on July 3, 2012.

Unlike the previous Spider-Man flicks that follow Marvel’s comic book plot, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN creates a new, untold story. Utilizing a new cast (shown below)  helps the audience with the transition.

Spider-Man Cast:

  • Andrew Garfield – Peter Parker
  • Emma Stone – Gwen Stacy
  • Rhys Ifans – Dr. Curt Connors
  • Denis Leary – Captain George Stacy
  • Campbell Scott – Richard Parker, Peter Parker’s Dad
  • Embeth Davidtz – Mary Parker, Peter Parker’s Dad
  • Irrfan Khan – Rajit Ratha
  • Martin Sheen – Uncle Ben
  • Sally Field – Aunt May

Background Info:

The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt, Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves. The screenplay is from a story by James Vanderbilt, based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Yes, I know it’s a mouthful, but I want to give these men credit for reviving a fading comic book hero and movie franchise.

Review with Spoilers:

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN tells the story of Peter Parker, a skate-boarding, photo-taking, science loving outcast high schooler. Yet the movie doesn’t start there. The opening scene starts with a glimpse at Peter’s past, the last day he saw his parents. Peter is seen walking about the house, calling out for his father before entering his father’s office to discover the window broken and papers scattered. His cries raise an alarm, summoning his father who races into the room. Opening a secret drawer the father removes several scientific documents, placing them inside a briefcase. Although, we can’t see their contents, we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that those papers are the reason they’re in danger.  Grabbing Peter, the family races to Uncle Ben and Aunt May’s house where they leave him to be raised.

Fast forward several years and we’re introduced to a teenage Peter. Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush,  the intelligent and sassy Gwen Stacy, not Mary Jane. Their chemistry is palpable and much more believable than the one shown by Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst in the previous Spider-Man flicks.

While helping his Uncle Ben with a small flood in the basement, Peter discovers his father’s briefcase and an old newspaper clipping. Both turn his world upside down!

The newspaper clipping is an important discovery. It leads him directly to Oscorp, where Gwen Stacy also works, and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors, his father’s former partner and best friend. Yet, it pales in comparison to the documents Peter finds in a secret compartment of his father’s briefcase, the very documents he saw his father hide on the night they ran from their home and the reason why they ultimately disappeared.

In his quest to understand his parents’ disappearance, Peter Parker is transformed into the amazing Spider-Man. He makes life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero, after the tragic death of his Uncle Ben. These choices prepare him for the collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, who he unwittingly helped to create with the information contained in his father’s documents. Feeling responsible, he resolves to stop The Lizard, but at what cost?

Memorable Quotes:

Aunt May to Peter Parker: Secrets have a cost. They’re not for free, not now, not ever.

Dad: I remember someone saying last week that her fantasy was to live in a chocolate house.
Gwen: Well, that’s impractical. (Slams door)
Gwen: (Opens door) … and fattening (Slams door)

Gwen to Peter Parker: He made you promise, didn’t he? To stay away from me, so I’ll be safe.

Let’s talk! Have you seen the movie? Who do you think is a better Peter Parker/Spider-Man: Andrew Garfield or  Tobey Maguire? Let us know in a comment!

Disney’s BRAVE Movie Review

Recently my tween and I were invited to see BRAVE, the newest film by Disney and Pixar.

The movie rated PG started off with a heart warming scene between the mother, Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson), and Princess Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald). The scene quickly changes when Merida walks off into the forest.  Be forewarned, that scene caused quite a stir in the theater. Several younger children were frightened and cried; as a result, keep this in mind when viewing the first portion of the movie. Rest assured, the rest of the movie was funny, action packed, and heart-warming.

The movie follows Merida, the main character, as she strives to come out from under her mother’s thumb. According to Queen Elinor, a princess must clean, must not chortle (defined as a “snorting, joyful laugh or chuckle” by thefreedictionary.com), and must always, always strive for perfection.  Merida rebelled. Can you blame her?

Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric Witch (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing chaos forces Merida to harness all of her skills and resources to undo a beastly curse placed on her mother before it’s too late.

In the process, Merida’s relationship with her mother is transformed, teaching her the true meaning of love and bravery, and shattering all thier preconceived notions. Will she be brave enough to see it?

Will you?

Let’s talk! Are you planning on seeing BRAVE this summer? Let us know in a comment!

“La Luna” Short by Enrico Casarosa

I love film shorts by Pixar, sometimes even more than the movies themselves! In less then ten minutes they convey a message of hope and fun, without saying a palabra/word. Definitely not an easy task to do, but they do it exceedingly well.

“La Luna”, which means The Moon, was written and directed by Enrico Casarosa. It is one of Pixar’s latest shorts and can be viewed before BRAVE . I loved the animation and the message conveyed. Perfect for boys, I think!

Synopsis

La Luna is the timeless fable of a young boy who is coming of age in the most peculiar of circumstances. Tonight is the very first time his Papa and Grandpa are taking him to work. In an old wooden boat they row far out to sea, and with no land in sight, they stop and wait. A big surprise is in store for the little boy as he discovers his family’s most unusual line of work. Should he follow the example of his Papa, or his Grandpa? Or will he be able to find his own way?
