I grew up in a predominately Hispanic neighborhood in the South Bronx, one of the poorest boroughs in New York City. Our family did not always have access to fresh, healthy foods or safe places to play outside. Thankfully, our local community center stepped in to fill those needs. It was a lifeline. They allowed the children to play and get active in a safe environment. They also provided healthy meals, as well as a community that valued healthy lifestyles at a time when I didn’t realize its value.
Now I do.
This Hispanic Heritage Month, I’ve partnered with the Anthem Foundation. Why? Because the Anthem Foundation is working with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America to help Hispanic children develop a passion for and commitment to healthy, active lifestyles that will help reduce childhood obesity. They’ve established a program called “Triple Play” to share the importance of physical activity and proper nutrition through the program’s three components, focused on mind, body and soul.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Triple Play program will help children who grew up as I did, as well as those more fortunate. By teaching and encouraging them to stay active and eat well, they are changing their future and giving them opportunities to live a long and healthy life. And that is a beautiful thing.
