Wordless Wednesday: Dessert, Desserts and Calories!

Ever since they changed the laws in New York, making restaurants display the calories on their menus, I can’t eat dessert without feeling guilty! I use to be able to eat a salad, then order a delicious piece of cheesecake or a scrumptious brownie without feeling any dieter’s guilt. I mean seriously I had a salad right? Everyone knows that the fiber in the salad made the dessert’s calories disappear!

Now when I go to pick out my dessert, this is what I see…

The owner told me patrons rarely order desserts now. Hmmm I wonder why?

Does your state display calories?

Wow, I think that would make it hard to order dessert too! However, I would try my best to just ignore it…cheesecake is just too good to worry about how many calories are in it!

I might have to start ordering more deserts so they don’t go unappreciated 🙂 I generally don’t have much of a sweet tooth, though, except for chocolate.

I’m not sure I noticed the calories on menus on this trip in NY – that doesn’t mean they weren’t there, it just means I wasn’t paying attention…

  • Avatar Ms. Latina November 25, 2009, 1:55 am

@ CatSynth: They even have it in Dunkin Donuts now, which I think is horrid LOL I use to be so care free! But I learned that Delis are not required to post calories so when I have a sweet tooth I go there!!

  • Avatar Deb November 25, 2009, 2:08 am

Ouch! But we go out so rarely, I think I’d do it anyway, it’s part of the whole experience.

  • Avatar Alicia November 25, 2009, 2:20 am

Oh man! I hope that doesn’t come into affect here! LOL, well, knowing me, I’d still order the dessert. heehe

@ Alicia: You’re an active Mom so I don’t think you need to worry about calories anyway!

  • Avatar Run DMT November 25, 2009, 2:41 am

Yeah, that would definitely ruin your appetite. MAN!

  • Avatar sunnymama November 25, 2009, 4:09 am

I have never heard of that being done here. Hope it doesn’t catch on! Happy WW 🙂

  • Avatar Robin from Israel November 25, 2009, 5:25 am

Oh wow, that would so take the fun out of ordering dessert :(. I suppose you could always share one to take some of the sting out of it.

  • Avatar Melanie @ Whimsical Creations November 25, 2009, 9:14 am

They took the fun out of having dessert once in a while didn’t they?

  • Avatar Ms. Latina November 25, 2009, 9:26 am

    @ sunnymama: I hope it doesn’t either!

@ Robin from Israel: I thought about that but those brownies and the cheesecake are so delish that I end up eating the whole thing!

@ Melanie @ Whimsical Creations: I think thats why I’ve taken up baking 😉

  • Avatar Tina November 25, 2009, 9:29 am

Yikes! No, I have not seen the calories listed (nor do I want too)

  • Avatar Trish November 25, 2009, 9:35 am

My thought process is this, if no one sees you eat then calories dont count 🙂

  • Avatar Dragonfly Lady November 25, 2009, 9:42 am

    OOH… now that’s naughty!

Happy WW and Thankgiving…. lets go and enjoy some pumpkin pie!!

    Here’s a recipe:- https://www.gardenersreach.com/post/Pumpkin-Pie-with-Brown-Sugar-Walnut-Topping.aspx

  • Avatar Ms. Latina November 25, 2009, 9:55 am

@ Tina: They even list them on Dominos pizza! I never realized they had so many calories till I looked at the menu. The boys complain, but now I won’t buy it.

  • Avatar Trish @IamSucceeding November 25, 2009, 10:09 am

I would love that..would make me think twice! 🙂

  • Avatar Julie@Momspective November 25, 2009, 10:21 am

I think I lost 2 pounds with a virus this week and I think I just gained it back looking at these! YUM!

  • Avatar Mariana November 25, 2009, 11:41 am

Oh my goodness… I WISH bakeries/restaurants did that over here. Seeing 630 calories for one dessert would definitely make me think twice about ordering it. Unfortunately this probably means the prices are going to go up on all the sweets! 🙁

  • Avatar Sabrina November 25, 2009, 12:24 pm

If I want it bad enough…I eat it. Not the wisest or healthiest thing to do. Everything in moderation…

  • Avatar Ms. Latina November 25, 2009, 12:26 pm

@ Mariana: I have to admit my cholestoral has gone down but I still miss my sweets!!!

@ Julie@Momspective: Thats the only thing I do now- look cause knowing the calories scared me away!

@ Trish @IamSucceeding: It def. made me think twice! I don’t buy them either. I am baking more which is good because I use healthier alternatives now.

  • Avatar Cascia @ Healthy Moms November 25, 2009, 12:41 pm

Wow that is a lot of calories. But they do look good! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

  • Avatar Ms. Latina November 25, 2009, 1:26 pm

@ Cascia @ Healthy Moms: I knw! I actually got pics of the once with the LEAST amount of calories. Some were 800+!

  • Avatar Ms. Latina November 25, 2009, 1:28 pm

@ Sabrina: Thats the problem, once I savor that sweetness, I can’t stop! No self control here 😉 thats why I miss our work-outs! You and Wanda pushed me!!!!

  • Avatar Ofelia November 25, 2009, 1:43 pm

New Jersey does not require calories – I try to do the research if possible afterward. Most times I say “well it was worth it”. Better to enjoy the food instead of just drooling over it and wondering. You know the saying “curiosity killed the cat”

  • Avatar Secret Mom Thoughts November 25, 2009, 3:17 pm

Yummy! Not sure if they are worth the calories.

  • Avatar dianne - bunny trails November 25, 2009, 3:42 pm

That’s just so sad. Those look delicious, too.

  • Avatar mizhelle November 25, 2009, 3:49 pm

Awww sad! wish they put it on small font hahaha looks yummy!

    u may view mine here

  • Avatar Ms. Latina November 25, 2009, 4:10 pm

@ Secret Mom Thoughts: Now that I know exactly how many calories are in each, I haven’t eaten them like I use to. That would cost me way too much time on the trendmill!

  • Avatar Kristi November 25, 2009, 4:53 pm

Unfortunately, the posted calories wouldn’t sway me. I’d still shovel those delicious goodies in my mouth! LOL
Thanks so much for stopping by my blog. Have a Happy Thanksgiving! 🙂

    Hi LatinaonaMisson,

I just subscribed to your blog! I really enjoy your articles. 🙂

I also work in Midtown Manhattan. I noticed these desserts were from Europa Cafe! Cool!

Anywho, I would have to say that many people have realized the amount of empty calories they use to consume per day. I am one who completely stopped having a donut/danish/bagel in the morning with my coffee. Now I just have fruit and coffee or a granola bar and coffee. It has helped a lot.

    Ciao,
    Rachel

Oh Lord I hope they never display dessert calories here in Georgia! Can you imagine? I think the state’s economy would be in trouble!

On the other hand, while I do enjoy dessert, sometimes I eat something that’s just not worth it. So, if I knew the calories then I would think twice and save my calories for the really good stuff.

  • Avatar Life with Kaishon January 8, 2010, 6:56 pm

Oh my gosh. This would definitely make me stop eating dessert too! I think I need to move to NY : )!
