The Sky is Falling… And, Then it Didn’t. Our School Selection Story.

This year has been full of change, lots of changes, for myself and my sons. I often felt like Chicken Little crying, “The sky is falling! The sky is falling!” And, then it didn’t.

After months and months of preparing, interviews, tours and general running around, my youngest son, Andrew, was accepted into a wonderful New York City Quaker High School. For those who don’t know, a Quaker school is a school that believes that all individuals, regardless of social economic standing, race, or gender, have the ability to be good, to see God, and to use that truth for good. Students graduate with a strong sense of worth and belief in social advocacy. A Quaker school has small classrooms and a high teacher to student ratio. They also support studying abroad to expand a child’s outlook. All qualities that were important to Andrew and myself.

Andrew was accepted at four equally fantastic schools. We decided on this particular one because we know it’s history.  My youngest brother also attended the school and they were instrumental in his success.  But more importantly than that, was the fact that they cared about him. They became my brother’s extended family. He is still in contact with the school and many of his former classmates.

I cried when we found out. It would not have been possible without the generous scholarship Andrew received. We are beyond thankful for this opportunity and know we are extremely blessed.

In the coming months, I hope to share what I learned during our school selection process.

It’s not the first time we undertook it. Years ago, Karl, my oldest, was accepted into City and Country School. He received a very generous package, upwards of $30,000; however, even with that I was unable to afford the portion that I had to contribute annually. At the time, I barely made $20,000 and was struggling to hold it down as I completed my Bachelors. Thankfully, God was gracious. Karl excelled in public school. Ultimately, receiving a full college scholarship.

I’ve always emphasized education on this blog. It has the power to open doors and change lives.

Last year, Karl studied abroad, traveling to Argentina, India and Africa. This year, he was chosen from a select few to showcase his photography at Arts in Ireland, a competitive arts program in County Clare, Ireland.

Upon his return, he will travel to India. He was awarded a research grant and will remain there for approximately two months to complete his research.

Many of you who are long time readers have read about my journey as a single parent. You have seen my sons grow … so I’m sure you will understand when I say that as proud as I am of their educational success, it will never compare to the hearts they have for God and for service to others.

I’ve learned through the years that it takes a community to raise a child. Thank you for being part of that community, for sharing our trials and our triumphs, for encouraging and even criticizing.

You made us stronger.

I hope to give back as much as you’ve given to us. Together, we can ensure that all our children have equally amazing opportunities.

Gracias de corazón. / Thank you from the heart.

I remember meeting you at one of my 1st blogger events (with Paula Deen’s sons) and being so inspired to be proactive about my son’s education. Maybe a year later I became a single mom but still held on to the things we talked about…God Bless you and your boys! I’m back in the rat race of looking for programs for my son now so I’ll be back more and more. THANK YOU ALWAYS
