Sabroso Saturday: Honey Whole Wheat Bread

It’s Sabroso Saturday (Translation: Tasty Saturday)! The day when we share recipes that have helped us stretch our budget, our imagination and our taste buds, without sacrificing our health!

********************

This week I am featuring a recipe I discovered on the back of a flour bag, Honey Whole Wheat Bread. I found this recipe a few years ago and love it! The honey in this recipe gives it a distinctive flavor. I can NOT begin to explain how sabroso/ delicious the bread tastes. Dab some jelly on it and add a Light Frappuccino and you have a leisurely morning breakfast. Or on those cold blustery days you can enjoy it with an Argentinean Beef Stew or Carolyn’s Chili recipe. This bread can be combined with so many things – you’re only limited by your imagination!

Best of all, this recipe is heart-healthy since it uses whole wheat flour. If your family is not used to whole wheat flour, you can put it in slowly, substituting a portion of the all-purpose flour with wheat in small portions until they get used to it.

Below I copied the recipe below in verbatim.

Honey-Whole Wheat Bread

Makes 2 loaves, app. 16 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 packages regular active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup of honey
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 3 teaspoons salt
  • 2 1/4 cups very warm water
  • 4 1/2 cups Gold Medal whole wheat flour
  • 2 3/4 to 3 3/4 Gold Medal all purpose flour

Preparation

  1. In small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water; set aside. In large bowl, mix honey, butter, salt and very warm water; cool 5 minutes.
  2. To cooled honey mixture, beat in 3 cups of the whole wheat flour with electric mixer on low speed, scraping bowl frequently, until moistened. beat on medium speed 3 minutes, scraping bowl frequently. Beat in remaining 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour and dissolved yeast. With spoon, stir in 2 1/4 to 2 3/4 cups of all purpose flour until dough pulls cleanly away from side of bowl.
  3. Place dough on floured work surface. Knead in remaining 1/2 to 1 cup all-purpose flour; continue kneading 5 to 10 minutes until dough is smooth and springy. (This part takes out your aggression for the day! LOL) Grease large bowl with cooking spray; place dough in bowl, turning bowl to grease all sides. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and cloth towel. Let rise in warm place (80° to 85° F) 30 to 35 minutes or until doubled in size.
  4. Generously grease 2 (8×4 or 9×5 inch)loaf pans with shortening or cooking spray. Gently push fist into dough to deflate; divide in half. On lightly floured surface, roll each half of dough with rolling pin into 18×8 inch rectangle. Starting with one 8 inch side, roll up dough tightly, pressing with thumbs to seal after each turn. Pinch edge of dough into roll to seal. Fold ends under loaf; place seam side down in pan. Cover; let rise in warm place 30 to 45 minutes or until doubled in size.
  5. Heat oven to 375° F. Uncover dough; bake 30 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 350°F; bake 10 to 15 minutes longer or until loaves sound hollow when lightly tapped. Immediately remove from pans to cooling racks. Cool immediately, about 1 hour (Note: Keep away from kids/mates or they will try to devour it before cooled!)

FYI: If you’re not amante to miel/ a lover of honey you can remove it from the recipe. You can also substititue the honey with other ingredients and/or add topping to the bread. The choices are endless!

¡Buen Provecho!

Que rico! I have a breadmaker and I think I am going to get crazy today and make some because of your recipe. Of course, it is also so much easier to use a breadmaker. LOL

ooooops I forgot the code and your website called me a spambot – eeek, Funny.

So here is what I said, I’m going to give it a try – although my cooking usually only involves a can opener and a microwave. cocina es espantoso !!!!!!!!!

But I love me some bread – although thanks for saying I could cut out the honey – just regular old fresh baked bread makes me swoon.

I’m off to the store to get cooking spray, flour, yeast and more butter – I heart butter.

    Wish me luck.

There’s really nothing that compares to homemade bread, so delicious! Thanks for sharing the recipe. My posting is about Aebleskiver – a Danish spherical pancake that’s fun to make an eat. You can control the amount of oil and that’s a good thing!

    Migdalia

The outside somehow got a little burned – ok more than a little – looked like charcoal. Coulda been – the oven maybe – or global warming, or 2012 approaching – or gremlins –

But the inside was all sweet bready goodness

    I cooked – I’m proud of me.

Now to call a HazMat team for the outside of the bread

    God bless

Another great recipe you have provided us with. This sounds fabulous. Bread and bread type food is my favorite in the whole world. I could live on bread. When I go to a restaurant that has bread I like I have it for dessert too. Hubby and I have been into some honey rolls I found to make so this is right up our alley. Thanks again for an amazing recipe.
