Due to the economy, New York City has faced a slew of budget cuts. Many programs were closed or drastically reduced. Sadly, children were not spared.
Come September when schools open their doors in New York City, many children will be left without after-school programs, tutoring services, and sports and arts classes. Parents will also be forced to provide the basics that were normally given to our generation, like books, pencils, crayons, and even cleaning supplies!
The lack of cleaning supplies is particularly disturbing since children spend most of their days at school; consequently, it can become a breeding ground for germs. Knowing this Clorox wishes to remind families that we should teach our children the below three easy steps to prevent the spread of germs and maintain environments that inspire brighter futures:
- Sing and Scrub: Wash hands with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds (the time it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice).
- Do the Elbow Cough: Cough and sneeze into your elbow instead of your hands to help prevent the spread of germs by touch.
- Disinfect Hot Spots: School staff and adults should routinely clean areas that people touch often, like desktops, remote controls and light switches.
What’s important to note is that even if a classroom starts out clean, germs can – and do – build up all day. In a study done at the University of Arizona by Dr. Charles Gerba*, evidence of Influenza A virus was found on 13.6% of swabbed surfaces in the morning and jumped to about 50% by the afternoon! As a parent, this concerns me; as such, I plan to support my children’s teachers in keeping their classrooms clean by providing teachers with hand sanitizers and canisters of Clorox Disinfecting Wipes to help make clean-up easier.
Clorox is also helping needy schools via its grant called “Power a Bright Future”. Power a Bright Future is a grant program that will provide resources to schools in need of support. They program will give away a total of $110,000, one $50,000 grand prize grant and three $20,000 grants.
You have until September 27, 2010. There are two ways to get involved – by nominating a school or voting for your favorite nomination. To nominate a school or to vote for your school go to www.powerabrightfuture.com. Nominations can be submitted in one of three categories, Learn, Play or Create, between August 12 to September 27, 2010. If I had $50,000 to fund a school program, I would have a music program in school that would allow children to learn to play an instrument, even if their family couldn’t afford it.

If I had $50,000 to give as funds for a school, I would like it to help fund programs that foster physical activity.

I just received a phone call telling me that because of the lack of “state funding” there will be NO crossing guards for our schools. How sad is this..

I would love to bring the music/choir program to better heights. Music is so important.
State has cut out the options in languages its also cut a ton of extra activities. its so sad that they dont have as much to choose from.

State budget cuts have affected our schools by cutting certain funding to books and buildings. We are having to come up with larger sums to cover supply/book fees.

1. Now that you’re preparing for back-to-school, how can you help in keeping a healthier and happier school for your children?
For me, becoming part of the school community allows for me to be able to keep track of what is going on in my daughter’s school, it also allows me to provide my daughter with the attention she needs in the areas she needs work in and also give me a chance to help the school staff out. Helping hands always equal healthy and happy results.
2. If you had $50,000 to fund one program in your child’s school, what would it be?
I would donate it to the after school programs. Most schools do not have enriching activities or supplies, or even staff to provide the children of professional parents a safe and enriching environment after school hours. Most schools had the program cut because of no funds. If my school one I would create a wonderful after-school program filled with different classes the children can take. Yoga, dance, music… the possibilities are endless!
3. How have state budget cuts affected your child’s school?
Well for one, the after school program at my daughter school is non existent. It creates chaos, stress, and insecurity. I have no idea where I will be placing my daughter during the hours of 3 -6. I’m in the midst of preparing for an after school schedule that will be beneficial to us both.

My daughter is entering her second year of preschool. Her first year was wonderful. She loved her teacher and sometimes didn’t want to come home becuase she was loving school so much! However, this year, because of budget cuts, her teacher was moved to a 3rd grade classroom. This was heartbreaking for my husband and I because we felt she was the perfect teacher for our daughter AND a great teacher in general, probably close to the best preschool teacher in the school.

I would use the $50,000 to improve the food served in our cafeterias. I was inspired by Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution show.
