Is King Kong a puppet?
He is and he isn’t. Technically, he is an animatronic puppet operated by a whole team of puppeteers or Voodoo King’s persons as the Kong team call themselves. At any given point during the play, Kong is being moved by a group of King’s persons. It’s important that they not ruin the experience of Kong so they try extra hard to blend into the background with their black clothing and movements.
How big is King Kong, really?
Sitting in the dimmed theater, you’ll be awestruck at how huge King Kong is. This ape is about 20 feet high, that’s almost two stories high and weighs a ton, literally! Gi-nor-mous!
Voodoo Operators control King Kong
No, not with a Kong doll and pins and needles. The voodoo operators work in tandem in a small soundproof booth on the side of the stage to control Kong’s jaw, facial expressions, and even the sounds he makes! They also control shoulders, arms, and wrists.
Kong Has His Own Private Entourage
Similar to the lives of the rich and famous, Kong comes with his own entourage. This group of 10 individuals attends to his every need, but not as you would expect. They don’t make sure his list of demands is met before every performance. No. The King’s people have a much more important task. They are in charge of King’s movement during the show! Dressed in black so as to minimize their appearance during the show, these puppeteers work the ropes that move Kong’s limbs. At one point, these incredible men and women, even hurl him above the audience! Not an easy task considering Kong weighs a literal ton.
King Kong at The Broadway Theater is The First of Its Kind
The world was introduced to King Kong in 1933. Since then there have been several spin-offs, and even a remake of the original film, but there has never been a King Kong play. In the original King Kong movie, he was brought to New York to become the “Eighth Wonder of the World”. Today, you can come face to face with this wonder at the King Kong musical on Broadway.
