When I think of runners, I think of long, lean bodies. I don’t have that type of body. And yet, I want to run. I want to feel my body push itself as it goes faster than it ever has. I want to see bodies whiz by, not because they’re running, but because I am. I’m not a runner, far from it, but I signed up for #WomenRunTheWorld, a 5.8 mile Central Park Loop.
Inspired by two friends, I decided it was now or never. I wasn’t going to wait until I lost 20 more pounds or learned how to run gracefully. I am accepting my ungraceful Phoebe-like running style and my extra pounds and doing it anyway!
I’m Not a Runner But I Signed Up for #WomenRunTheWorld!
I had to type that again, in BOLD, as a declaration to myself and the world. I’m ready. I upgraded my Asics sneakers, which I love 💕, to a pair that has shock-absorbent GEL technology. They offer better support and cushion for my flat feet. Plus, they were on sale and sales get my blood pumping as much as running does!
I’m still hitting my stride. I can’t run a mile as fast as my friends. I’m much slower than the recommended time for one mile but I’m not letting that discourage me. I’m not competing against anyone but myself.
The race starts at 8 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. That gives me 8 hours to run almost 6 miles. I can do that! I may not finish as quickly or as gracefully as others but I will finish.
Let’s chat! Are you a runner? If so, do you have any tips for people just starting out? Share your wisdom or encouragement (please) in a comment.

Hey Everybody I just started running less then two year ago and I ran my first Marathon in 2019. What I would tell new runners is to get the right tools for the job. Like sneakers Nike reacts are great but get them a size up to give your foot room. Drink a lot of water and Zero Sugar Gatorade. The Most important Wisdom that I could give you is to find yourself a Run Crew to run with and just run/walk your pace with them. Listen to the Runners around you. There is a lot of knowledge in these group. I myself run with Boogie Down Bronx Runners and they are an amazing Crew that has helped and pushed me to become better in running and in life! Have fun and run people!
I love your advise @John! I never considered shoe size but can understand the reasoning. Feet swell! I just didn’t realize it would be such a huge difference. I love Asics sneakers. I read a few reviews on running sites before purchasing a pair. i love the cushioning and support. They also work for my wider feet. New Balance sneakers are also great for wider feet . Nike tend to run tighter imo. Re: water, do you carry water with you? Should I bring some with me when I run? I have so many questions!
Hi Migdalia! Great blogging site! I can relate in a lot of what your saying. I have 2 boys ( still small 7yr old and 1 1/2 year old) I have also told myself when my boys are older I will start to refocus on myself , only thing for me is that my health was really taking a toll on me .. I recently just had gastric sleeve surgery and I feel it’s the best thing I could’ve done for myself and my kids. I am only 3 weeks post op and have already lost 25lbs. It wasn’t a vanity thing for me but I needed to focus on me to get this done for them.. like you said you can’t pour water from an empty can.. keep blogging and inspiring others .. Latina sisters at heart. We are strong , proud and inspiring.
