5 GREAT Ways to Watch Television Programs for FREE

Recently my boys and I gave up cable as part of a summer challenge I imposed on us (Crazy, I know!). The boys are settling in quite nicely now, but I have to admit I do not want to re-live those first few days without cable again.

We had grumbling, mumbling and lots of crying. The last one was actually from me! I was so missing those quiet moments I had when the boys had cable. It was an adjustment for all of us. But I am happy to say we are much better now.

I’m sure it’s because I cheated a little bit. I actually put it back on so my tween could watch Disney’s Let It Shine. Yes, I know…I’m a wimp but we’re back to no cable again.

We’re doing much better the second time around.

Want to know our secret?

I’ve discovered ways to watch television shows without paying for cable! Using our  iPad, I’m able to connect it to my television and watch shows via:

1.  Aereo – a service that lets you watch (and record) live TV throughout the city. You can sign up for a 90-day FREE trial, and get access to over 20 broadcast channels, 40 hours of remote DVR storage and usage on up to five devices. After the promo, the fee is $12 per month, which is way cheaper than basic cable.

2.  Disney App - You can see FULL episodes from Disney Channel favorites including “Good Luck Charlie,” “Shake It Up” and “Phineas and Ferb,” Disney XD’s “TRON: Uprising,” and Disney Junior’s “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse” and “Jake and the Never Land Pirates”. The new WATCH Disney Channel, WATCH Disney XD and WATCH Disney Junior apps are available for FREE from the App Store on your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore/.

You can also see the above Disney shows online at

3.  ABC Family App- You can see FULL episodes of Pretty Little Liars, Secret Life of the American Teenager, Melissa & Joes, Jane by Design, Bunheads and more. The ABC Family app is available for FREE from the App Store on your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore/.

You can also see ABC Family shows online at http://beta.abcfamily.go.com

4. Google your fave shows and watch online! I’ve discovered that you can watch almost anything online. In fact, my teen recently discovered our fave show online: Avatar: The Legend of Korra Episodes. You have to view ads but we don’t mind. If the ads bother you, you can purchase the episodes on iTunes; however, I think FREE is better. To watch Avatar: The Legend of Korra Episodes 1-12 click HERE.

5. iTunes- You can download a variety of free episodes from the App Store on your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore . The line-up changes frequently so when you see a show you like, download it quickly.

Aereo: Watch and Record Live TV Throughout The City (Free Trial)

I have some exciting news that is sure to save you money!

One word: Aereo.

Remember it!

Why is it memorable?

Because Aereo lets New Yorkers, like you and me,  watch (and record) live TV throughout the City – whether sitting in the park, waiting at a cafe, riding the bus, etc. It’s an online television platform that that offers live HD TV through web-enabled iOS devices like the iPhone, iPad, Roku, AppleTV and MacBook (and Android support coming soon).

Even better…

New members will receive a 90-day free trial, access to over 20 broadcast channels, 40 hours of remote DVR storage and usage on up to five devices.

There is no application to download, no box to buy and no equipment to install.

Watching Aereo transforms you. You’re no longer in your Mom’s living room. You’re out in the world, wherever you want to be, and your TV can go with you.

To register go to aereo.com. You must request an invite. Since space is limited make sure you request the invitation as soon as possible.

Features include:

  • Remote antenna which user can choose to access live 24/7 broadcasts of the major networks and local stations
  • Remote DVR with 40 hours of  cloud-based storage allows you to record individual shows or set season recordings with the simple touch of a button from any device.
  • Easy-to use programming guide and unique search tool features touch screen optimization, so user can search and discover programming by topic, actor or title.
  • Social capabilities allow users to discuss and recommend shows in real-time with other Aereo members on Facebook and Twitter.

Now that’s something that deserves a big, fat shout of joy. So say it with me: “WEPA!”

Enjoy and don’t forget to stash tha extra ca$h!

A Telenovela Made for English Speaking Viewers

I’m an avid soap follower, but not just any soap opera, it has to be a telenovela/soap opera. Why? Because American soap operas are way too long, dragging on and on and never finishing. Unlike traditional American soap operas, telenovelas end. They also offer just as much, or even more DRAMA for your viewing pleasure.

This season, Mun2 is premiering for the first time a Spanish soap opera with English subtitles. This bi-cultural network is reaching out to viewers who might not necessarily speak or understand Spanish completely but have the desire to immerse themselves in the Latin culture. And what better way to immerse yourself than with a good authentic Mexican telenovela?

“La Reina del Sur” [Translation: The Queen of the South] starring Kate del Castillo, Rafael Amaya, and Ivan Sanchez, premiered for the first time with English subtitles on February 19 on the bi-cultural network, Mun2. This 63 episodic telenovela set rating records, making it Telemundo’s most successful novela in the network’s history with 16.6 million viewers during the course of its on-air run.

“La Reina del Sur” is a story of a typical working woman who finds love in all the wrong places, which eventually tangles her up in a series of events that leads her on an unexpected path. Her journey is dramatic, explosive, provocative, riveting, and suspenseful. This novela definitely does not fall short of one’s expectations.

I had the pleasure of interviewing two of the novela’s hottest stars, Rafael Amaya and Ivan Sanchez.

Rafael Amaya

Rafael Amaya (shown above) is a Mexican actor with a pretty extensive resume, so it isn’t surprising to see him starring alongside one of Mexico’s biggest actresses, Kate del Castillo. When asked what distinguishes “La Reina del Sur” from other telenovelas, Rafael responded,

“This is a love story with real characters….with real imperfections…living in a reality that may be unknown to many…a hostile reality…one living in the drug realm. The story takes place in real environments in Mexico, Colombia and Spain. If you’re ever curious about any of these cultures, just watch the show, viewers will learn a lot about these cultures and also be exposed to the ever so news-worthy drug war situation existing in Latin America today. It is important to know that it is a reality…a sad one…but true. But that is what makes this love story even greater…that love grows and lives in hostile environments, just as it can anywhere else. At the end of the day, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and that is what you’ll see in “La Reina del Sur”.

Ivan Sanchez
His co-star, Ivan Sanchez, is excited to see “La Reina del Sur” crossing over onto American airwaves. According to Sanchez,

“With today’s growing Latin American population, it is important to get shows like “Reina del Sur” on networks such as Mun2 as they become more and more prevalent within today’s society. It’s a powerful love and survival story that I can’t wait for American viewers to see. It covers real life material like no other novela you will ever see.”

If you haven’t seen Kate del Castillo or Rafael Amaya on the American screen yet, keep your eyes open, as you might catch them on some American movies or series. As for their fellow co-star Ivan, don’t expect to see him on any American shows or movies. The Spanish actor has no desire to cross over into American film or TV like his fellow co-stars already have. He enjoys his career just as it is now. So make sure not to miss him or his fellow co-stars on one of today’s hottest and exiting telenovelas, “La Reina del Sur” which airs on Sunday nights at 8pm. on Mun2.

My New Addiction Part 2

3e1c721eaf_oc_julia_0129r1finout

Earlier this week, I spoke about my addiction. It causes snorting and extreme fits of gaiety. It makes me forget my kids, the telephone, household chores and even that sexy guy who lives next door. Well, maybe not the sexy guy, but it definitely makes me think less of him!

My addiction also reminds me of my younger years, my much crazier, wackier years! Back then I couldn’t focus, I couldn’t sleep well and even tried a few trends that I ahem don’t want to mention.

What’s my addiction you ask?

It’s The New Adventures of Old Christine!

I can’t say it enough how I can relate to this character! In fact, just like her latest episode I think I may have collected a number (or two!) while searching for a good Blockbuster movie! I may not have called them back it was definitely an ego booster! ;)

I also had not just one, but a few friends, that resembled Christine’s best friend Barbara, played by Wanda Sykes. (Thanks Luly, Lydia, Millie and Wanda!) They were honest, sometimes brutally so. They held me up, cause love, or lack of it, can turn a person into a loca/crazy woman!  I tell you women need a Barbara or two in their lives, to balance them out!

What about you do you have a “Barbara” in your life?

Don’t forget to tune in to “The New Adventures of Old Christine”! Its on 5 days a week and in some areas, twice a day (Yes, I watch both episodes – I told you I was addicted!)  Check out http://www.oldchristineweekdays.com/listings/ to find your local show times and don’t forget to tell me if you’ve been watching!

My New Addiction: The New Adventures of Old Christine

f6522577a0_julia-beauty_0036ra-11

I recently started watching “The New Adventures of Old Christine” on television. Although I’m not much of a TV person, I felt myself drawn to this show starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, from Seinfeld.

The comedy is about a divorced working mom who’s juggling the daily stresses of motherhood, work, dating, her son’s new school and maintaining a positive relationship with her ex-husband (Um yeah right!), who’s dating a new pretty younger girlfriend who’s also named Christine. Talk about complications, it’s worse than my 1st pregnancy!

Old Christine’s world is crazy! Not only does she have to deal with her ex-husband Richard (who’s still very much in her life, in spite of the fact that he has a new girlfriend), but she also lives with her brother Matthew while raising her son Richie as a single mom. On top of that, she owns a gym with her best friend Barb, frequently goes on dates, and has to deal with the “meanie-moms” at her son’s private school? Some how, though, Christine manages to juggle it all while making me laugh in the process.

Just like Christine, I’m divorced and juggling the daily stresses of motherhood, my son’s new school and trying to maintain a positive relationship with my ex.  Also like Christine, there was a time when my life was so chaotic that I would call and leave myself messages, just to remind myself of something I had to do. It got to the point where I actually filled up my message box with reminders and, yes, even a few ”I love you! You’re worth it!” messages (HA!) so it was good to see that I wasn’t the only frazzled Mamí out there!

I’m sure there will be many more similarities as I continue to watch the show. Thank goodness because it makes me feel just a tad more normal! If you want to join in my new television addiction, and perhaps tweet it up with me during the show, you can tune in to “The New Adventures of Old Christine” 5 days a week.  Just check out http://www.oldchristineweekdays.com/listings/ to find your local show times.

While you’re on the site, make sure you check out the videos, they are hilarious! I have to admit I could totally relate to the “Surround Yourself with Good Positive People” video. Yup, I admit it, at one point that was definitely me!

Have you seen “The New Adventures of Old Christine” yet or do you plan to? Let me know in a comment!
