Wordless Wednesday: Puerto Rico y Sofia Maldonado

I recently discovered Sofia Maldonado while walking the city streets. She is a controversial mural artist, who was born in Puerto Rico, from a Cuban mother. Her artwork caught my eye because of its vibrant use of color, its elements of hip hop and reggeton, skateboarding and graffiti, and its trendy depictions of Latina females of all shapes and sizes.

Below are a few pictures of her artwork, which are featured in Times Square.

To show  just how large her murals are, I asked my little one to stand in the picture.

The ring worn by the girl in the last piece, shown below enlarged, states  “Libertad” which means liberty in Spanish, as well as the date: 1898. The date references the end of Spanish colonial rule in Puerto Rico. For those of you interested in reading more about Puerto Rico and its struggle for liberty, click HERE.

You can also see some of her racier artwork on her blog, including this FANASTIC mural created on a house in Puerto Rico.

Have a great WW and don’t forget to link up!

Interesting murals, I like the first (with the skateboard) and the last one in particular. It took a moment for the text on the ring to come into focus.

Those are really incredible. I love the colors and the shapely figures of the women. I could see these on t-shirts. I would wear one! I will visit her blog later to check out some more of her artwork. Thanks for sharing this! I love it.

Beautiful murals! She’s very talented. You know, one of the things I love about your WW posts is that they’re gritty. They’re not posed or picture perfect. You give us a really urban, NY perspective and I love that! 🙂
Thanks for stopping by and linking your Wordless Wednesday post up on my linky again. I received your email and totally forgot to respond, but I hope you and the family are doing well. Are you and the boys back home? Has life returned to normal? Take care gir!

I agree, the use of color is captivating. I don’t care too much for the murals though.
    Have a great day!

Wow, those are incredible. How do you even plan and execute artwork that large? I’m amazed.

  • Avatar Marilyn @ A Lot of Loves March 17, 2010, 4:28 pm

It’s amazing to me that artists can paint on such a large scale. Very neat.
