New Twitter Hashtag: #WepaWednesday

I recently started a new hashtag on Twitter called #WepaWednesday to celebrate all the tweeters, bloggers and events that make us go “WEPA!”

For those of you unfamiliar with the term, “Wepa”,  pronounced Weh-Pah, is a Spanish slang word, which originated with Puerto Ricans. It was originally used when dancing Salsa as an exclamation of joy. It was a way to voice excitement during a great salsa dance move. It is now more mainstream and used in a variety of ways by many Latin and American cultures. It can mean various things but is typically used to say the Spanish equivalent of cool or awesome. It can also be used to show various emotions, like excitement or even surprise. Ultimately the word’s definition can be changed by the inflection of your voice or how it is utilized in a sentence.

Out of curiosity I asked several tweeters how they’ve used the word Wepa. Below are a few of their replies:

  • @Mami2Mommy: …it means excitement and “stand back, I’m about to start partying!”
  • @ModernMami: It’s a way of showing excitement about something.
  • @Lil_Blackshop: I see it as WOW= WEPA
  • @NewYorkChica: I use it …. when we dance to loud music.

Following that theme #WepaWednesday will celebrate the tweeters, bloggers and special events (or products) in our lives that make us go WOW, that make us dance, that bring excitement and joy to our lives!  They make Wednesday extraordinary. They make it a #WepaWednesday!

So tell me … how are you putting the Wepa in your Wednesday? Because its not hump day, its #WepaWednesday!

This is great. I heard this a little bit as I was growing up in Mexico. It wasn’t as widespread as it might be elsewhere but when I someone mentioned me in Twitter with the tag I immediately knew what it was. Thanks for this post! Shout out to @mammi2mommy @chicmommyusa & @julito77

Today Paraguay plays against Argentina for a spot in the World Cup. I will be WEPA-ing it up as I root for my beautiful home country of Paraguay with a nice dinner and glass of wine.
