Twitter Lingo

I am doing a series of helpful posts on Twitter. My last post explained how to get started on Twitter, including the basics on how to sign up and design your background. You can read that post by clicking HERE. Today’s post will talk about Twitter’s lingo. When I first started tweeting my own short 140 character conversations, I felt lost! I didn’t understand the Twitter lingo and that made it harder for me, which is why I think this post is very important. It allows you to join Twitter conversation fairly quickly.

1. @ sign– the @ sign is a conversation opener with a specific user. By placing the @ sign before a username, your tweet (message) will go directly to that user.

  •  Ex. @MsLatina

2. D Username– When you write D Username, with a space in between the D and the username, your tweet is sent privately. This tweet can only be seen by that individual and you.

  • Ex. D MsLatina

3. RT – If you place an RT before a person’s tweet than that means you are Re-Tweeting or resending it for yourfollowers to see. Normally RTs are used to spread helpful information or something you think is of value. It also brings you to the attention of the person who sent the original tweet, since they receive a copy of the RT tweet. FYI: Tweeters love when you RT their tweets. In fact, most (like me) will follow you back when you do!

  •  Ex. RT @MsLatina Have a beautiful day!

4. TY – Thank You

5. TweetUp– A tweet up is a real life meet-up between tweeters that also includes tweeters on Twitter.

6. <—  Used when you want to respond to a RT so that others can differentiate between your response and the original tweet. You can also add your response in parenthesis or at the begininng of a RT.

  • Ex RT @MsLatina Its a beautiful day!  <— Not in Maryland
  • Ex 2. RT @MsLatina Its a beautiful day! (Not in Maryland)
  • Ex 3. Not in Maryland RT @MsLatina Is a beautiful day!

7. Tweeple–  Tweeple is a Twitter variation of people. This word is normally used when you want to send out a Tweet and include all people in the statement.

  •  Ex. Good morning tweeple!

There are many more words on Twitter; however, I think these are the most important to know when you first start tweeting (sending your own 140 character messages).  You may also see variations of words like Tweetheart (Sweetheart) andTweety Pie (Cutie Pie), these terms of endearments are created as Twitter expands its reach. You can create your own and throw it out into the twitter scope, if it gets picked up as a new tweet word, let us know about it!

I signed up for Twitter awhile back and I still don’t get it!!! But, I think this helped me!!

My #1 question was how to send a message directly to that persons Tweet. Now I know to put the “@” in front of their name.
