Dermalogica Academy Spa Services Review

Relax. Unwind. Leave your troubles behind. At the Dermalogica Academy, you can do just that! Under the supervision of a Dermalogica Academy Instructor, skin therapists in training perform skin treatments and waxing services at a fraction of the cost. Hesitant about trusting  an academy? Read Latina On a Mission’s newest contributor, Ivette Hoyos’ review below. I’m sure it will have you running to schedule your own spa day!

********************

As a Mom, a spa day is not always a priority, or at least not on the same level as diapers and other toddler necessities. I couldn’t justify the cost and so my spa days fell to the wayside.  When this assignment fell in my lap, I was excited until I heard it was at an academy.

In my mind, I envisioned a stuffy school but it was anything but! From the moment I arrived at the Dermalogica Academy, I knew I was in for a special treat. The venue was open and chicly modern.

However, it felt a bit too open for me.  I was worried my pampering experience would lose its intimacy while others received similar treatments in the same room. Yet, I was wrong.

The music set the tone. It played softly in the  background, reminding me of my trip to Aruba, while the lighting illuminated the walkway to my skin therapist in training, Anastasia. She was very pleasant and helped me settle into my session.  After laying down, I was wrapped in a warm blanket and my hair was pulled back and secured away from my face.  Anastasia soon began working her magic on my very neglected face.

She did a great job informing me of each process before commencing. She cleansed the day’s make-up away, performed a flash exfoliation, and then applied a SPF 30 primer, but not before my face received a much needed massage. I have to admit, I was in such a state of relaxation all I remember is repeating to myself how truly amazing and so well worth IT this experience was!

I zoned out from the world, while my face had years exfoliated away.  I also feel as if some of my sun spots (or “Pregnancy mask”) faded away in those twenty minutes.

As I left, I vowed I would be back in the near future. I highly recommend scheduling an appointment at the Dermalogica Academy. It’s a great way to pamper yourself at a small fee, while also helping someone fulfill a dream. A win win for all in my book!

Chic & Cheap: Handbags

I believe a handbag is as necessary as the air we breathe. Whether heading to a Broadway play, a concert or even to the local bodega/corner store, a handbag speaks volumes about our sense of style. It is, and will always be, a fashion necessity.

At a retail range of $50-$80, the Emilie M handbag is an investment piece without the investment.

I’m in love!  What about you?

Psst…keep your eyes out for Latina On a Mission’s upcoming Emilie M Handbag giveaway!

Chic & Cheap: Ponytail Holders

Recently, I got a sneek peak at the latest ponytail holders, thanks to CVS/Pharmacy.

Ponytails have changed so much over the years. They are no longer considered a quick, style for harried moms. They are a fashionable option for busy women and their holders should reflect that! The below scrunchies are a few of the more modern options available at CVS/Pharmacy.

Goody Doublewear

The below ponytail can be worn on the wrist as a bracelet or wrapped around a ponytail. The pack comes with three (3) ponytail holders and retail for approximately $5.99.

 scünci Ponytail Holder

(1) and (2), featured below, are prototypes. (1) contains 6 ponytail holders. It is made of a elastized ribbon, which is knotted at the end. One of the pieces also contains a clear bead. (2) is also made of an elastized ribbon. However, that’s where the similarity ends. This ponytail holder has three circular steel rings in gold, rose, and dark gray. It can be worn on your hair or wrist. For variation, it can also be stacked. These are not available to the public yet.

Chic & Cheap: M.A.C. Press On Nails

I recently heard about the M.A.C. Press On Nails from a friend. She gushed on and on so I had to share!

Created by New York designers Brian Wolk and Claude Morais of Ruffian for M.A.C., the press on nails come in three (3) different designs: Demilune, Spectator, and Demoiselle- shown below from top to bottom.

The M.A.C Press On Nails retail for $25 on the maccosmetics.com website. The limited edition set includes 24 nails (2 sets and 4 extras).  When compared to the cost of two salon manicures, this set more than pays for itself!  An added bonus: The stares and compliments you’re sure to receive!

My fave hands down!

Let’s talk! Have you ever worn press-on nails? Let us know about your experience in a comment!

7 Tips to Finding a Great Bra

A bra is a necessary tool in any woman’s attire. Dressed up or down, a bra can hamper your style or elevate you to a higher level (pun intended). It can make you look younger, older, smaller or fuller. Whether full figured or small breasted, a bra can enhance your natural curves, allowing you to go from frump to fab with the snap of a clasp.

Jene Luciani, a bra expert, shares her top 7 tips to finding a great bra below.

  1. Be aware of your body type so you know what bras to look for. For example, if you are more of a top-heavy “apple,” you likely will be looking for fuller coverage bras, not demi-cups. A full guide by body type can be found in The Bra Book.
  2. Wear a thin t-shirt while trying on so you can see what each bra looks like under the sheerest of circumstances.
  3. Get a fitting! Or give one to yourself, using the instructions in The Bra Book. Be open-minded about your size. If you’re surprised (or disappointed), remember that size is just a number (and a letter!). The proper fit of the bra is the most important part. Look for ‘key’ fit points like the ‘bridge’ between the cups lying flush and that nothing is bulging, pinching, gaping or billowing it, and the straps aren’t digging in or slipping!
  4. If you’re in a bind and there’s a bra that you really love but they don’t have your size, it’s usually OK to go up a band size and down a cup size – or vice versa.
  5. Don’t be afraid to put the bra on and face yourself in the mirror with a critical eye. If you see any gaps, spillage, digging in, or other signs of poor fit, it’s not the right bra. Turn around and look at the back as well. The back band can be very telling too when it comes to proper fit.
  6. Don’t get stuck in a size rut. Be sure to plan another fitting six months to a year later (our sizes fluctuate due to weight gain, hormonal changes, aging and other life changes so it’s important to get fitted at least once a year!) Our bras also need to be replaced every 6 months to a year due to wear and tear so it’s a good rule of thumb.
  7. Once you find a brand you like, or that caters especially to you, like Curvy Kate for full figures, stock up on your ‘7 essentials,’ ie one bra for every day of the week and all occasions. These include a spa bra (comfy for everyday wear), a sports bra if you exercise, a nude t-shirt bra, a great strapless bra, and a few ‘special’ bras that are decorative and pretty, perfect for spicing up a hum drum work wardrobe (but only you will know!) and of course, for spicing up evenings – even let one peek out occasionally!

Let’s talk! When’s the last time you were fitted for a bra?
